PLAYER MILESTONE – HAYDEN McGEAREY – 400 GAMES
This Saturday’s Division 5 Game against West Torrens will be Hayd’s 400th game for the club: -
Division 1 – 155
Division 2 – 147
Division 3 – 23
Division 4 – 38
Division 5 – 36
Hayd’s followed older brother Mags into the junior grades at Glenelg. He was a self-admitted chubby average player in juniors when first coached by his dad Peter and Jim Yeo. Playing mainly as a 1st baseman, sometimes outfielder.
Moving through juniors at about the age of 15-16 the penny dropped and Hayd’s decided to shape up literally and take baseball more seriously, resulting in him making the state under 18 team. Things continued to rise from there and he developed his pitching craft under Dave Ziersch who was one of Hayd’s biggest influences on his development.
Hayd’s made his Division 1 debut, when coach Nathan Davison put him in to pinch hit against a red hot Dushan Ruzic, and then to the outfield. Hayd’s rise continued from there and in season 2015/16 he went an amazing 13-0 on the mound to be a driving force in our Division 1 premiership team, his highlight of his baseball career.
Asked who are the best players he’s played with and if your surname is Ziersch then you’re one of them, Hayds full of admiration for both Jay and Dale Ziersch, whilst toughest opponent, our current Div 1 assistant coach Nick Talbot or Tom Brice come to mind.
Hayd’s has had a great career, however will always remember 2012 when he and the club lost one of his great mates Blake Horrocks, and it’s the culture the club has shown in tough times like this that keeps Hayd’s coming back to the club.
Congratulations Hayd’s all the best for Saturday.
